Stay Heart Smart This Summer!
When you think of summer, you think of the beach, swimming, and of course BBQs! So while you and your loved ones are enjoying this season, be sure to also be aware of your own health. Here are some tips for staying heart healthy this summer:
- Get plenty of fun exercise, such as swimming, volleyball, walking or jogging, and even gardening
- Drink plenty of water, especially when it is super hot outside (basically everyday)
- Stay indoors when it is too hot, especially during the hours of noon and three (NOTE: Extra important for children and the elderly)
- Wear light colored, loose clothing when outside
- If having a BBQ, stick to foods such as fish which is extra heart healthy because of the high omega-3 content, sweet potatoes, baked sweet potato fries, veggie kebobs with mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, peppers, squash and whatever other veggie you’d like, grilled corn on the cob, and use leaner burgers or turkey burgers
- Make sure to load up on the sunscreen, only as long as it has UVA/UVB spectrum coverage
So take into consideration these tips and have a great and healthy summer!
