1. Currently around 500 such additives are used in the farming process, some of which have been linked to asthma, growth retardation, headaches, hyperactivity in children, allergic reactions, heart disease and osteoporosis. These food additives include preservatives, hydrogenated fat, colorings, sweeteners, aspartame (artificial sweetener) and monosodium glutamate (MSG). — Under the New Organic Certification – these additives are banned.
2. Organic farming delivers the highest quality, best-tasting food, produced without genetic modification or artificial chemicals, with respect for the environment and animal welfare, while helping to maintain the landscape and rural communities.
3. UK Soil Association reported that 50 to 93 percent of pesticide residues remained on apples, broccoli and potatoes after washing.
4. Organic Farming saves energy. Conventional farming consumes 12% of the country’s energy supply; that’s more petroleum than any other single industry.
5. Organic farms support substantially higher levels of wildlife in lowland areas, especially wildlife groups on the decline. In a three year study of 44 farms by the British Trust for Ornithology, twice as many butterflies, five times as many wild arable plants, and 40% more birds were maintained. The study confirmed that organic farming addresses the main causes of the current dramatic decline in farm wildlife.
