Agave Nectar vs. Sugar
Most people use packets of granulated sugar to put into their tea, coffee, cereals, or atop other food, when the real winner is actually agave nectar. Agave is best known for as the plant from which tequila is made, it has also been used for thousands of years as an ingredient in food. The nectar made from the plant is known in Mexico as aguamiel, or “honey water.” Some pros to using agave instead of sugar are:
- lower caloric intake
- low glycemic index
- contains calcium, iron, magnesium, and potassium unlike sugar which has no nutritional value
- helps fight colon cancer
- improves the function of the gallbladder by breaking down fats
